photography is more like a way to cure myself
from an interview w/ Madi Ju -> http://www.huhmagazine.co.uk/view_article.php?id=1664&s=art&t=photography
Madi Ju is a professional photographer and writer living and working in Beijing, China. Her work has been published by Thames & Hudson, Foam Magazine and Rizzoli, and has been exhibited worldwide. We caught up with Madi to talk about just one of her photographs.
Did you know you were going to be happy with the results as soon as you took it?
Yes. The good thing about photography for me is I feel it when I take a photo. If I feel that the mood and the whole atmosphere is good, I will take it, it's already a very nice moment. It's a way to connect with my inner feeling. For me, the photography is more like a way to cure myself.
I've never heard anyone say that about photography, is it something you loved from a young age?
Since I started taking photos. First it's just a hobby, then I got some jobs and exhibitions to do and suddenly I can earn money from it. I started thinking why I took photos, why I always feel so happy about taking photos. My personality might not be what you've seen from my photos, I'm a very quiet person in the crowd, but I love to get involved in indie culture. I feel there's something really attractive in it. When I take photos of friends around me, I feel that's the right way to connect to people. For me, if I can't talk to them at the time, I will take photos and show them later. I feel it's a way to release myself, to cure the bad side of my personality. That's how I feel, and that's why I don't really care about if I can get a photo job, or the exhibition or publication. It is not the most important part - I have to take photos to get to know people.
